Ford To Revive Capri Name For New Electric SUV

Ford To Revive Capri Name For New Electric SUV

Capri is without doubt one of the most iconic nameplates in the blue oval’s back catalogue.

Last used in 1986, the Capri badge appeared on three generations of Ford’s best-selling coupe, firmly securing its position as a household name. Everyone of a certain age knows the Ford Capri. If they didn’t own one themselves, they probably knew someone that did.

Soon, you’ll be able to buy a brand-new Capri once more. But it’ll be a far cry from the coupe you remember - or the fearsome, fire-spitting Group 5 racing version pictured above.

Instead, Ford plans to use the name on a new, all-electric SUV model. Genius or sacrilege? We’ll let you decide, but there’s no denying that the new Capri is likely to create quite a buzz when it launches some time in the next 12 months.

We’re not yet sure when the new Capri will be unveiled - Ford is quite keen to keep the design under wraps for now.

A fair bit is known about the new vehicle, though. For starters, it’s expected to utilise the same ‘MEB’ chassis platform as the current Ford Explorer and Volkswagen ID.4 - and that means it’s likely to offer a similar level of performance too.

The flagship model will almost certainly be powered by the same electric motors as the current Explorer, which - combined with an 82kWh battery - produce 335 bhp and offer a range of over 300 miles.

The Capri will likely be sold more on its design than its performance; early spy shots of test mules have revealed a dramatic sloping roofline, no doubt intended as a nod to the sleek Capris of old.

Time will tell just how much of a resemblance the new car bears to the original. Although the shape will of course be poles apart, Ford may get creative and implement a few distinctive design touches to pay tribute to Capris of old.

Look out for an official reveal of the new car some time in 2024.
